Remembering Daveon Dunn of Garner HS Died By Suicide, Ligon Middle School Mourns Basketball Player’s Death, Raleigh NC

The Raleigh community is grieving after the tragic death of Daveon Dunn, who passed away by suicide. He was remembered as a talented athlete, dedicated student, and a kind young man whose smile brightened those around him.

Daveon, a Garner High School graduate and former basketball standout wearing jersey #17, played as a 6’2” shooting guard. His athleticism and passion for the game inspired many of his teammates and classmates. He later studied at Saint Augustine’s University, where he pursued academics and personal growth.

In addition to his time as an athlete, Daveon served as a Project Management Intern with North Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities, reflecting his drive to learn and contribute beyond the court. He was also a proud graduate of Ligon Magnet Middle School’s LLD program.

Friends and loved ones have been pouring out tributes across social media.

Key Norman shared heartfelt words: “Rest Easy brother ❤️🕊️ You will forever live on, sending my condolences to his family and loved ones. We will meet again one day but until then, watch over us brudda! Daveon Dunn #LLD.”

Dontez Rogers remembered his guidance, saying, “Not going lie in school twin always told me right… praying every day you’ll be loved and missed Daveon Dunn.”

Many recalled his kindness and resilience. James Stucks wrote about their conversations, noting, “Depression is real and we talked every 2 weeks when you cut me and my son’s hair… You’ll be loved, missed, and never forgotten.”

Family members are struggling with the heartbreaking loss. His cousin Shawn Dunn said, “Who knew 12 weeks ago when I saw you in your new position, that he’d have you in a better position today! Rest well little cousin.” Angel Amerson added, “Please keep his parents in your prayers, they really need it. Lord Jesus this really hurts.”

Daveon’s life touched many, from his family and friends to teammates, classmates, and coworkers. Though his passing leaves a painful void, his memory will continue to inspire strength, love, and resilience in the community he cherished.
